Somewhere in the last decade, a worry hardened into folk wisdom: that all this scrolling and tapping is quietly making us stupider — shrinking our attention spans, thinning our thinking, maybe even denting our IQ. It's a tidy, frightening story, and it gets repeated with a specific, scary-sounding statistic attached surprisingly often. It's also, in the strong form, not what the research shows.
The real picture is subtler and, oddly, more useful. Heavy screen use does not appear to make you less intelligent in any measurable, lasting way. What it does is tax — heavily, relentlessly — the specific mental systems that intelligence runs on in the moment: attention, working memory, the ability to hold one thread without the others bleeding in. The distinction matters, because it points the fix somewhere completely different from "use your phone less."
The IQ scare is mostly bad arithmetic
Let's dispatch the scary statistic first, because it poisons the whole conversation. You may have seen the claim that constant email and interruptions drop your IQ by around ten points — more, the line usually adds, than smoking cannabis. It gets cited everywhere. It is also a near-perfect example of how a flimsy finding becomes an immortal fact.
The number traces to a small, unpublished 2005 exercise run for a technology company by the psychologist Glenn Wilson. Wilson himself has since said the result was wildly over-interpreted: it measured a temporary dip in test performance while people were being actively bombarded with distractions in the room — a transient state, not a durable change to anyone's intelligence — and it was never a rigorous study of IQ in the first place. The man whose name is attached to the "ten IQ points" line has spent years trying to disown it. When the headline scientist is the one telling you the headline is wrong, that's usually the end of the story.
Strip away the junk statistic and a cleaner question remains: if screens aren't lowering your intelligence, why does a heavily-fragmented day leave you feeling foggy, forgetful, and strangely spent? The answer isn't about IQ. It's about what happens in the seams between tasks.
Attention residue: the tax you don't see
The single most helpful concept here comes from organizational psychologist Sophie Leroy, who gave it a name in a 2009 paper with a very relatable title: Why is it so hard to do my work? Her answer was a phenomenon she called attention residue.
This is why the folk framing — "I only looked for a second" — misreads the bill entirely. The glance is cheap. The re-entry is expensive. And a phone buzzing on the desk isn't one interruption a day; it's dozens, each dragging a fresh smear of residue across whatever you were trying to think about. Stack enough of them and a day that contained plenty of "work" somehow produced very little thinking. You weren't lazy. You were paying an attention tax you couldn't see itemized.
The multitasking myth, handled honestly
If switching is costly, the obvious next question is whether the people who do it constantly — the champion media multitaskers, six tabs and three chats and a video deep — have simply adapted. Gotten good at it. The most-cited study on this suggests, provocatively, the opposite.
In 2009, Eyal Ophir, Clifford Nass, and Anthony Wagner at Stanford compared people who habitually juggle many media streams against those who don't. The heavy multitaskers were worse — worse at filtering out irrelevant information, worse at keeping their working memory tidy, and, counterintuitively, worse at switching between tasks, the very thing they did all day. They were, in the researchers' framing, more distractible by everything, including their own stray thoughts.
Here is where the editorial honesty has to kick in, because this finding gets over-sold constantly. It is correlational. It cannot tell you which way the arrow points. Maybe heavy multitasking erodes your ability to filter — or maybe people who were always more distractible are simply the ones drawn to juggling six streams at once. Almost certainly it's a loop feeding both ways. So the intellectually clean takeaway is narrow but solid: heavy media multitasking is associated with weaker attention control, and "practice" plainly does not make you immune. Anyone who tells you the study proves your phone is rewiring your brain is reading more into it than the data allows.
Why the brain is bad at this in the first place
None of this is a modern failing. What we call "multitasking" is, for cognitive work, mostly a myth about the machinery. The brain doesn't run two demanding streams in parallel; it switches between them, fast, and pays a small toll each time — the well-documented switch cost that decades of task-switching research keeps finding. Every switch takes a beat to reload the rules of the new task, and error rates climb in the changeover.
Working memory — the mental scratchpad where you hold the thing you're reasoning about — is also famously small and fragile. It holds only a few items and evaporates the moment attention moves. Deep thinking is largely the act of protecting that scratchpad long enough to build something on it: following an argument, holding a paragraph's thread, keeping four variables in the air while you find the fifth. An interruption doesn't just pause that work. It wipes the scratchpad, and you rebuild from further back than you'd like to admit. Heavy use is not the same as constant interruption
Now the distinction that reframes the whole problem — and the one the "screens make you dumb" headline flattens. There is a world of difference between using screens a lot and being interrupted by them constantly, and the research points its finger squarely at the second.
Spend three unbroken hours reading a difficult book on a tablet and you have used a screen heavily and thought deeply — no residue, no fragmentation, no tax. Spend those same three hours nominally "working" while a phone pulls you out every few minutes, and you've used the screen far less and thought far worse. Same device, opposite outcome. The villain was never the glass and the pixels. It's the fragmentation — the continuous chopping of attention into pieces too short to think in.
This is genuinely liberating, because it means the goal isn't abstinence, and "cut your screen time" is aiming at the wrong target. You don't need fewer minutes on your devices. You need fewer switches — longer, unbroken stretches where the scratchpad is safe. A person with high total screen time and few interruptions is often thinking better than a person with low screen time who checks a buzzing phone every ninety seconds.
The interventions that follow are the ones with actual mechanism behind them, and they're all about protecting continuity rather than shrinking usage:
- Kill the manufactured prompts. Most notifications aren't information you need; they're engineered cues designed to trigger a switch. Silencing non-human notifications removes the interruption at its source — the single highest-leverage change for protecting attention.
- Work in blocks, not in a stream. Batching similar work and defending a continuous stretch lets the scratchpad fill and stay full. It's the direct antidote to attention residue: no switch, no residue.
- Make the switch require a decision. A little friction — the phone in another room, the tab logged out — converts an automatic, residue-inducing glance into a deliberate choice you'll usually decline mid-task.

What we took from this
